Hemorrhoids and its Types
Hemorrhoids are one of the most common ailments rampant in the modern world today. Hemorrhoids are inflamed varicose veins which are located inside or just outside the anal canal. Hemorrhoids are of two types- external and internal. During external Hemorrhoids, you experience a lot of pain but not bleeding. During Internal Hemorrhoids, you will experience discharge of dark blood. In rare cases, the veins might burst and results in bleeding piles.
Cause of Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids, also known as Piles, occur due the enlargement of blood vessels within the anal and lower rectal regions. Piles are similar to varicose veins. They can manifest inside the rectum or beneath the surrounding anal region. The blood vessels in the anal area play a vital role in maintaining continence. But, sometimes these blood vessels undergoes enlargement, potentially leading to various symptoms related to Hemorrhoids.
One cannot estimate the precise cause of hemorrhoids, but usually happen due to heightened pressure within the blood vessels located around the anal region. This increased pressure on the varicose veins results in the inflammation of blood vessels near the rectal passage.

Different Types and Grades of Piles

Fortunately for such people, a proper channel of diagnosis and care for piles is ubiquitously available across medical facilities, so it doesn’t raise significant concerns. With respect to the location, we have defined four types of Hemorrhoids for you:
- Internal Piles: located deep within the anus, these Hemorrhoids are not visible externally. They result from the protrusion or extension of the rectal walls.
- External Piles: Seen as visible bumps around the anus, this type of Hemorrhoids can be observed by a doctor during a proper clinical examination.
- Prolapsed Piles: If the internal piles are left untreated, then it swells and protrudes from the anus. Such a condition is termed as prolapsed piles.
- Thrombosed Piles: This type of Hemorrhoids occur both externally and internally when multiple blood clots develops and renders into severe pain.
Grades in Hemorrhoids
The Goligher’s classification categorizes piles into the following four grades:
- Grade 1: This is the stage when anal cushions of tissue as well as blood vessels bleed but not prolapse.
- Grade 2: At this grade, the swollen veins prolapse because of straining but can retract on their own.
- Grade 3: This grade involves prolapsing of the anal cushions which can be repositioned into the anal canal manually.
- Grade 4: At this grade, Hemorrhoids at this stage remain prolapsed at all times, and need immediate medical attention
